Carry your CNIC (or passport for foreign visitors) — there are several check posts along the Karakoram Highway.
Fill up whenever you can after Chilas; fuel stations become fewer. Keep cash, as card machines are unreliable.
Check weather and road updates for landslides, especially in monsoon season (July–August). Start early each day and avoid driving mountain roads after dark.
Pack warm clothes even in summer. Nights in Skardu, Deosai and Khunjerab are cold.
